Rio de Janeiro, simply referred to as Rio, is a Brazilian municipality, capital of the state of the same name, located in the Southeast of the country. One of the largest international tourist destinations in Brazil,[8] in Latin America and also in the Southern Hemisphere. It is one of the main economic, cultural and financial centers of the country, and is internationally known for several cultural and scenic icons, such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado Mountain with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the beaches of the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, among others; the Maracanã and Nilton Santos stadiums; the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and its arches; the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro; the forests of Tijuca and Pedra Branca; Quinta da Boa Vista; the National Library; Paquetá Island; New Year’s Eve in Copacabana; Rio’s Carnival; Bossa Nova and samba. Part of the city was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on July 1, 2012. In 2007, it hosted the Pan American Games, when it invested in sports facilities (including the construction of the Nilton Santos Stadium) and in the areas of transportation, public safety and urban infrastructure;[30] and seven games of the 2014 World Cup. Still in the sports field, the city also hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics.
